You are invited to the 2024 Andreen Moot Court community presentation! Please join us on Saturday, September 14, at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts Studio Theater to watch the student attorneys present their appellate-style oral arguments to a three-member judicial panel.
This case tests the boundaries and limits of restrictions on abortion in the "post-Dobbs" era. In the wake of the "Dobb's" decision, which effectively overturned "Roe vs. Wade," the state of Columbia, like many other states, enacted stringent abortion restrictions pursuant to Senate Bill 850. The plaintiffs, four similarly situated women challenged the legality of Senate Bill 850 on religious grounds, asserting that their respective rights to "Freedom of Religion" have been infringed. Plaintiffs prevailed in the lower court by successfully seeking a preliminary injunction, which halted the imposition and enforcement of Senate Bill 850. The state of Columbia has appealed the ruling of the lower court and tonight's oral arguments will feature two student lawyers per side. Student lawyers for Appellant ("Columbia") will first present their respective arguments followed by student lawyers on behalf of Respondents. At the conclusion of the presentations, the court will offer feedback and commentary regarding the issues presented and the quality of the presentations.
Doors open at 5:00 PM, and the presentations start at 5:30 PM. There will also be a light reception afterward for an opportunity to meet and congratulate the finalists and their professors. www.slolaw.org
